About me

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, which is 1 of only 5 purely Orthopaedic Hospitals in the country. I graduated from Edinburgh University and undertook my Registrar training in the Manchester region. After completion of my training, I spent 18 months on fellowship in North America. I spent 12 months in Halifax, Nova Scotia, undertaking a Sports Medicine fellowship at the Sports Medicine Clinic of Nova Scotia. I subsequently spent 6 months at the Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre in Toronto, gaining further experience in Shoulder and Knee surgery.

In 2008 I was awarded the British Elbow and Shoulder Society North American traveling fellowship. This enabled me to spend a further 4 weeks visiting some of the world’s foremost shoulder surgeons in major centres such as New York, Los Angeles, San Antonio and Houston.

I am a honorary Professor at Birmingham and Aston University where I supervise PhD students investigating the use of stem cells in cartilage repair, tendon regeneration and rehabilitation following injury. I have over 60 scientific publications in various International medical journals and have written 4 book chapters on knee and shoulder injuries. I have presented over 100 papers and regularly teach other Surgeons as a faculty member at various national and International meetings.

In 2006 I completed an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering from Cardiff University. I have since designed my own fixation device for use in ACL reconstruction, which is currently in use world-wide.

My interests include all aspects of shoulder surgery. In particular, arthroscopic procedures such as rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilizations, capsular release for frozen shoulder and ACJ injuries. I also perform total and reverse shoulder replacement for arthritis of the shoulder.

I have a major interest in sporting injuries of the knee, including Anterior and Posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair and patella dislocation.

I have particular expertise in cartilage repair and I am a committee member of the International Cartilage Repair Society. I treat all aspects of cartilage injuries using the full spectrum of cartilage regeneration techniques and cell therapies. I perform all associated reconstruction surgeries including Meniscal transplant and Osteotomy in an attempt to prevent and delay joint replacement. In cases of osteoarthritis where the knee cannot be salvaged then I will perform a Total knee replacement.
